Canon has announced its latest full-frame mirrorless camera, introducing the Canon EOS R6 – price tag £2,499.99 / €2,899.99 / $2,499 – with a release date set for 27 August.
While the Canon EOS R5 – officially launched today – was originally announced earlier this year as a development project, the EOS R6 was largely a surprise to those who don’t surf the rumour sites.
Sensor
While the R5 is aimed at professional users, the EOS R6 is geared for both professionals and enthusiasts. Inside the Canon EOS R6 is a 20.1-megapixel full-frame sensor.
The 20.1MP sensor is paired with Canon’s latest DIGIC X image processor and delivers a native sensitivity range of ISO 100 to 102,400, which is expandable to ISO 50 to 204,800.
IBIS
Like the EOS R5, the Canon EOS R6 also boasts in-body image stabilisation. And like the R5 it provides five stops of stabilisation on its own and up to eight stops of compensation when used with IS-equipped RF lenses.
Also mirroring the EOS R5 is its continuous shooting prowess, offering 12fps burst mode via the mechanical shutter and 20fps with the electronic shutter.
Video
Where the Canon EOS R6 differs – apart from the sensor – is in its video capability. While the R6 cannot shoot 8K like the R5, it does join the short list of cameras that shoot 4K at 60p. What’s more, it can record Full HD video at 120fps.
Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF II system is also on board, which means there’s phase detection AF in both stills and video modes. Like the R5, Canon says the EOS R6 can deliver AF speeds of just 0.05sec. The EOS R6 can also focus in low light down to -6.5EV.
Body Design
In terms of body design, the EOS R6 boasts dual card slot, both supporting SD/SDHC/SDXC UHS II cards. It’s also Bluetooth- and WiFi-enabled. There’s also a 0.5-inch 3.69million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder with 120fps refresh rate and a 3-inch 1.62-million dot vari-angle touchscreen.
