Nikon Z9 Firmware v.2.0
The new firmware for the Nikon Z9 enables a collection of updates for stills and video. Most notably for video-shooters, both raw 8.3K/60p recording will be possible in-camera and 4K/60p Ultra HD footage oversampled from 8K 12-bit in-camera recording will be available with ProRes RAW HQ (up to 4K/60p) or Nikon’s new N-RAW format (up to 8K/60p and 4K/120p).
Also, in response to requests, a waveform monitor, a red REC frame indicator and a custom i-menu that displays video settings while shooting will be introduced.
Stills photographers will also find that AF set-ups can be customised using up to 20 selectable wide-area AF patterns along with the ability to recall focus positions with a selection of camera buttons.
It will also be possible to set the electronic viewfinder’s refresh rate to up to 120 fps and a pre-release image capture mode is introduced.
The firmware will be available to download from Nikon’s download centre on 20th April 2022.
Nikon Z7 II and Z6 II firmware v.1.4
Nikon has improved the autofocus system of the Nikon Z 6II and Nikon Z 7II significantly since their launch in October 2020 and the latest firmware builds on this with a refinement of the Auto-Area AF algorithm for improved focus on central foreground subjects.
The two cameras also get support for linear manual focusing to improve the accuracy of focus-pulling during video shooting.
In addition, the cameras will be made compatible with Nikon’s ML-L7 Bluetooth remote control.
The firmware will be available to download from Nikon’s download centre on 20th April 2022 but it should also be possible to make the update using Nikon’s SnapBridge smartphone app.

Nikon has also made two product announcements. Firstly, the company is set to release a 660 GB CFexpress (Type B) memory card which is designed to meet the demands of continuous high-speed shooting and 8K or higher video recording at high frame rates. The new card is said to offer read speeds of up to 1700 MB/s and write speeds of up to 1500 MB/s. The price and sale date have yet to be announced
