DxOMark has awarded the Huawei P40 Pro the highest camera rating ever achieved by a smartphone, with a score of 128.

DxOMark, which runs exhaustive tests on the image quality and sensor performance of cameras of all types, found that the Huawei P40 Pro offers a very wide dynamic range in its still images.

Its sensor also provides good detail in medium- and long-range zoom shots, as well as strong detail in bokeh images.

In terms of exposure, DxOMark says the P40 Pro produces accurate exposures in low light with ‘excellent’ texture and noise balance. It also says that AF is fast and accurate in all conditions.

On the video side, DxOMark praises the P40 Pro’s ‘effective’ image stabilisation, fast and accurate AF with good tracking and ‘nice, vivid colours in all conditions.’

Huawei’s P40 Pro is the company’s latest high-end smartphone, and features the recent Kirin 990 5G chipset, a 6.58-inch Full-HD+ OLED display with rounded edges and a quad-camera on the rear.

The primary camera comes with a very large 1/1.28-inch 50MP Quad-Bayer sensor that produces 12MP image output. As with other devices with similar sensors, it uses pixel binning to increase dynamic range and low-light capabilities.

With its score of 128, the Huawei P40 Pro leapfrogs the Oppo Find X2 Pro and Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro, which were previously the joint top-ranked smartphone cameras at 124. Sitting below those were three more Huawei smartphones, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro 5G, Honor V30 Pro and Huawei Mate 30 Pro.
