Sony has officially announced the RX0 II, price tag $700, which boasts a host of new video features such as Internal UHD 4K video at 30p and S-Log2 Gamma.
Inside the Sony RX0 II is a stacked 1-inch type (13.2mm x 8.8mm) Exmor RS CMOS image sensor offering 15.3-megapixel resolution. It’s paired with a fixed Zeiss Tessar T* 24mm f/4 wide-angle lens in a waterproof, shockproof, dustproof, crushproof body. The lightweight body comes in measuring just 59mm x 40.5mm x 35mm and weighing just 132g.
On the back of the RX0 II is a new adjustable 1.5-inch (3.8cm) 230,400-dot Clear Photo TFT LCD screen that tilts upwards up to 180 degrees and 90 degrees downwards. The LCD even works underwater.
Video Specs
The big news with the Sony RX0 II, however, is the addition of internal 4K video recording. The Sony RX0 II can record 4K 30p internal movies with full pixel readout and no pixel binning. The camera captures approximately 1.7x the amount of data required for 4K video, Sony says, meaning it’s able to produce smoother 4K footage with reduced moiré.
The Sony RX0 II also gets new in-body electronic stabilisation for producing stable footage when shooting handheld. What’s more, when you export your footage to a smartphone or tablet runing Sony’s ‘Movie Edit add-on’ application you can stabilise footage even further.
The app works based on what’s called Intelligent Framing. Users select the subject in their footage, and the application keeps this subject in the centre of the frame and reduces image distortion in a final edit. You can also select different aspect rations.
Slow motion fans will be able to record Full HD footage at up to 960fps. The RX0 II also offers S-Log2 for colour grading, Time Code and Picture Profile.
Once again, multi-cam setups are also possible with the Sony RX0 II.
Stills Photography
The Sony RX0 II also appears to be quite a capable stills camera, offering an anti-distortion shutter of up to 1/32,000sec and 16fps burst shooting.
Sony says it has enhanced the camera’s colour reproduction, particularly around human skin, and new image rating and protection options are available in-camera.
The RX0 II also inherits Sony’s popular Eye AF technology. You can set it with a half-press of the shutter button and then select the left or right eye.
Other options include interval shooting for timelapse videos.
The Sony RX0 II also boasts a microphone jack and an option Shooting Grip for vlogging.
